“Agents on the ground were ignored when they questioned the wisdom of this decision, and that just pours salt on the wounds of the families who lost loved-ones.  When the agents came forward with concerns, they were shunned and retaliated against.” – Sen. Grassley

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), ranking member of the committee, has sent numerous letters to the Justice Department requesting a response to whistleblower allegations that the department’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) agency deliberately allowed guns to be trafficked into Mexico under “Operation Fast and Furious,” which is part of the broader “Project Gunrunner.”

“Members of the Judiciary Committee have received numerous allegations that the ATF sanctioned the sale of hundreds of assault weapons to suspected straw purchasers who then allegedly transported these weapons throughout the southwestern border area and into Mexico,” Grassley stated in a Jan. 27 letter to the ATF’s acting director, Kenneth E. Melson.

In the a separate letter to Attorney General Eric Holder dated March 9, Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee, added,  “As would be expected, many of the guns were used in violent crimes. Worse, two guns from the program were found at the murder scene of Customs and Border Protection Agent Brian Terry in December [2010].”

A second Homeland Security law enforcement official, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agent Jaime Zapata, was  murdered on Feb. 15 in Mexico allegedly by drug cartel members.
