Marine Says He Faces Termination for Refusing to Pay Teacher’s Union Fee

Republican gubernatorial running mate Richard R. Tisei plans to file legislation today to save the job of a junior ROTC instructor in Worcester who faces the boot for refusing to join a local union whose contract doesn’t cover him, campaign officials said.

“It’s a crazy story and an outrage,” said GOP gubernatorial nominee Charles Baker. “I want to help him in any way I can.”

Retired Marine Maj. Stephen L. Godin has been ordered by The Education Association of Worcester to start paying $500 in annual union dues this month or be fired from his job as senior naval science instructor at the Junior ROTC Unit of North High School. Godin’s salary is set by the military, which also provides his health insurance. He’s said that unlike other teachers, he doesn’t receive any benefits from the local union.
